Trains to Machu Picchu

There are several ways to get to Machu Picchu: On the Inca Trail, on one of the alternate roads (Inka Jungle or Salkantay), on the long road by car or the short road by train. If you don’t like walking, the best alternative is the train journey.
The train trip to Machu Picchu is the fastest way to get there. Approximately 4 hours of travel will vary according to the train station from which you take the train.
The train journey to Machu Picchu crosses the beautiful Sacred Valley of the Incas until it reaches Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu town), which is at the foot of the Wonder of the World.

Which train to choose to travel to Machu Picchu? Peru Rail vs Inca Rail

There are 2 train companies with authorization to travel the train tracks for Machu Picchu: Peru Rail and Inca Rail.
There are 4 boarding stations for the train (Cusco, Poroy, Urubamba and Ollantaytambo). All train services are destined for the town of Aguas Calientes.

Peru Rail
It is the oldest company that operates the route to Machu Picchu, has 5 types of service to Machu Picchu:

  • The local train.
    It is the social service offered for national tourists (Peruvians). The purchase is face-to-face and personal at the Peru Rail offices, with the current Identity Document.
  • Expedition train
    It is the standard tourist service, it has panoramic windows.
  • Vistadome train.
    This train has cars with panoramic windows on the walls and ceilings which will allow you to observe and photograph the Sacred Valley in a special way.
  • Sacred Valley
    This train departs from Urubamba, offers a luxury service, has a lookout car and dining car. It includes lunch.
  • Belmond Hiram Bingham train.
    It is one of the most luxurious trains in the world, all-inclusive onboard service. It has 4 cars: a dining car, a bar car, gourmet dinner. The ticket includes transportation and admission to the wonder of the world Machu Picchu.

  • You must first enter the Peru Rail website
  • Then you must fill in the spaces with details of the trip: “route”, “destination”, “date” and the “number of passengers”. Then click on “Search train”
  • Check availability and choose the schedule of your preference (prices vary according to the day)
  • Complete the data with your personal information.
  • Verify the data placed
  • Choose the payment method: Visa, Master Card, Pay Pal or bank transfer.
  • Accept the “terms and conditions” and make the payment
  • Print the travel tickets which you will present on the day of your trip.

How to buy your train tickets to Machu Picchu in Inca Rail?

Via Internet:

  • You must first enter the Inca Rail website
  • Then enter the data of “round trip date”, “number of passengers” and “currency”. Then click on “Buy tickets”
  • Choose the route and check availability
  • Register passengers with personal information
  • Select a payment method and complete the requested data. Click on “start payment”
  • Print the travel tickets which you will present on the day of your trip.
