New entry times to Machu Picchu

Admission schedules have undergone several changes over the years.
Previously, it was allowed to enter and remain as long as desired, with the possibility of re-entry. This was modified in 2018, distributing visits in 2 groups (morning and afternoon), also with the possibility of re-entry.
Due to the increasing number of visitors, by 2019 and 2020 the entry rules have changed again, which are now in force.
Now the entry is made in 9 shifts, one every hour, from 06:00 to 14:00 hrs. The maximum residence time is 4 hours from the time of entry of your ticket. Example: If your ticket shows the entry time of 08:00 hrs, you can tour the citadel until 12:00 hrs.
Another change is that now there is no re-entry, if you leave the citadel you will not be able to re-enter, this will be important to consider because the hygienic services are outside the citadel, therefore, you must use them before entering .
There are 3 entry times to the Machu Picchu Mountain and Huayna Picchu Mountain, these are: 06:00, 07:00 and 08:00 hrs, each with a specific time of entry to the mountain. Each one allows you to tour the citadel and the mountain chosen for up to 6 hours after the entry time marked on your ticket, unlike the normal ticket, this allows the re-entry once to the citadel.

Alternative paths to Machu Picchu

Performing the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is the dream of many travelers, but due to high demand, prices have increased greatly together with the difficulty of getting spaces make it tedious to do so.
Therefore, there are more comfortable and economical alternatives. Among them the Salkantay road, the Inca Jungle Trail, the Lares road, among others.
All these suitable as alternatives to the traditional Inca Trail, in them you can enjoy beautiful landscapes and a different experience; These routes offer users more freedom and many of them turn out to be cheaper alternatives.
Hire Agency or Free
This turns out to be a great dilemma at the time of organizing your trip. Do I go on account or go with an agency? This will depend a lot on what type of traveler you are and what type of experience you want to get. In this section we will compare each aspect:

For free: Freedom
Traveling to Cusco for free can be a fascinating experience, this city has so much to see that in every moment you will have something to do.
Traveling for free will require that you be the one who should prepare the whole trip, from the flights you will take, the places you will visit, where you will be staying and where to eat.
With all the virtual tools we have, this has become a very feasible option. You can get accommodations with very low prices, of course under knowledge of not have comfort, and dispense with good cleaning and attention.
Cusco has many options for restaurants and other places to eat your food, it will be an adventure to explore each area and find the one that best suits you.
A point in favor of traveling for free is the freedom to decide what to do and where to go. Within Cusco city there are some archaeological centers and varied museums that you can visit on your own, and even several of them have site guides that for an extra amount can explain each place.
Disadvantages
Many places are difficult to access on their own and are much more expensive than going through an agency such as the Sacred Valley; there are others that cannot be reached on their own, such as the Mountain of Colors and others that are not allowed to travel if it is not through an authorized agency such as the Inca Trail.
Going for free also means not having an intermediary who advocates for you in case something goes wrong.
By Agency: Comfort
The most characteristic of taking a trip through an agency is comfort.
The experience will be a bit more expensive due to the varied services that it will offer you.
With the travel agency you only need to send your available days and your preferences, they will organize the entire trip.
An advantage is their experience with respect to the various schedules and services necessary for each attraction, they will know how to properly assemble the itinerary, ensuring maximum use of time during the contracted service. This is highly recommended in places like Machu Picchu, which requires different services to organize, such as lodging, income, buses, trains, transfers, guided.
The cost of a lodging is relative. Many times it is more convenient to hire it through an agency than to hire it for free, this because the agencies have a lower special rate from which you are benefited by hiring a package.
Regarding food, formal agencies maintain relationships with good quality restaurants as they intend to offer the best service to their customers, in these restaurants you will taste the best of local cuisine.
Many of the tourist attractions in Cusco can only be done through an agency. For example, the Inca Trail Ticket can only be purchased through an authorized and accredited agency to provide this service; places like Humantay Lake and Rainbow Mountain Vinicunca, since there is no public transport to these places, it would be impossible to reach.
Being the agency responsible for the service, if there is an unforeseen event that you do not like, the agency responds, they will be obliged to give you a quick solution.

Cusco and Machu Picchu have 2 very marked times in the year that are: the dry season (between April and October) and the rainy season (between November and March). For each of them, you must take forecasts for your family.
Rainy season:

This season has the highest amount of rainfall of the year, especially the month of February (for this reason the Inca Trail closes for that whole month). However, the days are warm, the temperature ranges between 19 ° C and 21 ° C, and the nights are not so cold compared to the dry season, the temperature is more stable.
Normally the rains are intermittent that can last from a few minutes to 2 to 3 hours. Rains can occur at any time of the day, and more frequently during the afternoon.
The advantage of this era is that you will find the citadel of Machu Picchu with fewer people than in high season, so it will allow you to take such special family photographs avoiding the conglomeration of people.
Something very nice of this season is the beauty of the greenery of the vegetation.
The most important thing at this time is to wear waterproof clothes, umbrellas and non-slip shoes especially if you come with children.
Dry season:
This season is the favorite for many travelers since it has almost no rain, excellent for family travel.
The characteristic of this season is the thermal variation that exists between day and night, the days are sunny, the temperature is high so it will be quite comfortable to wear light clothes (shirts with short sleeves, shorts, skirts), but during at night the temperature drops drastically so you should have warm clothes on hand to avoid getting a flu.
It is important to bring repellent since there are many mosquitoes at this season.

This is the time with the largest influx of visitors.
Between November and March it is the rainy season, the weather becomes mild and the rains are abundant especially the month of February. If you are scheduled to travel at this time, for Machu Picchu traditional programs are the most recommended. You will enjoy the greenery of the inter-Andean landscapes typical of this era. Being the time with fewer visitors will have more space for you to enjoy this beautiful land.

Tickets for Machu Picchu are administered by the Regional Directorate of Culture and have limited availability of 800 entries per shift.
There are 3 types of tickets: Machu Picchu Solo, Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu + Mountain, each of them has different schedules available.
To buy the tickets to Machu Picchu you have three booking alternatives: online, in person in Cusco or through a travel agent.
ON THE INTERNET: You must enter the Machu Picchu Ticket website in the availability section, choose one of the 3 types of ticket and the desired schedule and check availability. Once verified, you must fill out a form with all your data. After completing the form, you will have the option to pay in person at the bank of the nation in Peru or by Visa, Master Card, American Express, Diner Club or by Pay Pal and follow the payment process according to the payment method chosen . After the payment is made, within 24 to 48 hours you will receive by email your Ticket to Machu Picchu which you must present on the day of your visit to Machu Picchu. Finally, you must send your valid identity document or passport to the Machu Picchu Ticket mail, in case of a student, also send your current University Card to obtain a discount.
PRESENTALLY IN CUSCO: You must go to one of the offices of the Ministerio de Cultura Cusco with your valid passport and valid university card in case you are a student to obtain a discount. Payment can be in cash or by credit or debit card. We suggest taking a prudent time since you will have to stand in line, especially in the high season.
This option is not recommended because of the risk of not finding tickets available for admission to Machu Picchu and more if it is for the first shift which is very demanded and must be booked several months in advance.

Machu Picchu – The Wonder of the World

Today Machu Picchu is universally known for its imposing archaeological remains, for its impressive location and for the natural environment that surrounds it, making it one of the favorites destination of many travelers, thus being one of the most important tourist spots in the world.
This archaeological complex is called a citadel because of the large number of houses, ceremonial sites, temples, terraces and roads. Machu Picchu is a marvel of architecture and engineering due to the expertise of its builders who managed to build it in a place that even today would demand a great challenge to build it.
It raises a lot of admiration from historians, scientists and engineers from around the world, since it was built in a highly seismic and rainy area, therefore its constructions were made to resist earthquakes in addition to having a sophisticated drainage system to prevent flooding and water accumulation. It should be noted that the alignment of many of the buildings coincides with the solar solstices, points of dawn and sunset at certain times of the year.

Archaeologists estimate that it was built by the Incas during the fifteenth century of our era during the rule of Pachacutec Inca, but its function remains a mystery. It is also known that it was populated by a large number of inhabitants, it is believed that they were between 300 to 1000 people, only by nobles, priests and the “aqllas” (virgins of the sun).
Machu Picchu was lost through the years, since despite being within the jurisdiction of several haciendas over time, No one except the locals knew of their existence, of which they used the cultivation area, thus being covered by a thick weed.
During the nineteenth century celebrities such as Antonio Raimondi, Augusto Berns, Harry Singer, Herman Goring and Charles Wiener explored nearby places, some even got to see him. In 1902, the cusquenian Agustín Lizárraga with 2 companions arrived in Machu Picchu, proof of this was an inscription that they left in the temple of the 3 windows registered in a drawing made by Hiram Bingham, the inscription was subsequently deleted.
It was in 1911 that it was discovered and shown to the world by the American explorer Hiram Bingham, he was amazed and asked for support from Yale University, National Geographic Society and the Peruvian Government, so between 1912 and 1915 he carried out archaeological works.
In 1981 Machu Picchu was established as a Protection Zone. Since 1983 it is considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and in 2007 it was named as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.

IMPORTANCE

The importance of Machu Picchu Inca citadel is due to several factors, historians have classified it in sectors by the possible uses that the Incas gave it.

AGRICULTURAL SECTOR:

  • Superior Agricultural Area
They are located at the entrance of Machu Picchu very close to the cemetery. They have a rectangular floor plan, they show Inca architecture with mud mortar.
  • Lower Agricultural Area
It is the most important agricultural area of Machu Picchu, it contains more than 40 andenes. The andenes not only create fertile land, but also prevent soil erosion, they have an effective drainage that takes full advantage of the water.
Another important function of the andenes is the retaining wall, it was thanks to these structures that the Machu Picchu citadel could be built on top of the mountain.

THE SACRED SECTOR (HANAN)

  • The Main Temple.
It is located in the Sacred Square, it is located next to the temple of the 3 windows. It was built with carved and polished stone blocks, has a huayrana structure since it has only 3 walls.
  • The Temple of the Three Windows.
It is located in the Sacred Square. He has an exceptional work on the stones with which it was built. Possibly the 3 windows represent the legend of the origin of the Inca civilization, referring to the 3 tribes that leave the Tamputoco hill next to the Ayar brothers.
  • The Priest’s House.
This room belonged to the High Priest who in Quechua was called “Willaq Umu” which means “head that warns”, he was in charge of the main temple and that of the 3 windows.
  • Intiwatana.
It means “where the sun is tied”. It is the most important area of the sacred sector. It is located on top of a pyramid, it was carved on a mother rock. It is one of the most enigmatic places in Machu Picchu, it is believed to be used as an astronomical observatory.

RESIDENTIAL SECTOR (HURIN):

  • The Sacred Rock Sector or Earth Temple
It is a beautiful carved rock which represents the silhouette of the Pumasillo hill in the background. It is located at the gateway to the “Huayna Picchu” and the “Moon Temple”.
  • The Water Mirrors
This famous enclosure has 2 containers that full of water have the function of mirrors or can also serve as a mortar of herbs. It is attributed that this enclosure was an Acllahuasi or House of the elect, who dedicated themselves to spinning, preparing chicha (corn beer) and cooking for priests.
  • The Sacred Rock or Temple of the Condor
It is a magnificent temple designed in 3D, the head is on the ground as an altar and the wings are carved in the mother rock of the mountain. Behind the temple there are remains of niches and a network of dungeons. The chroniclers believe that they were Inca prisons, the accused waited inside, up to 3 days to receive his sentence. Those sentenced to death were offered to the sacred bird “El Condor”, their remains were left on the altar of the head of the condor, so that the Andean condor descends from the Andes to feast.
